A remote control is a handheld electronic device that allows users to control various other devices such as radios, televisions, DVD players, stereo systems and audio/video recording devices. For example, an AC remote can be used to perform multiple functions on an air conditioner, including turning it on or off and adjusting the cooling temperature.

What is Remote?

A TV remote enables users to change channels, adjust volume and color settings, as well as power the TV on or off. In 1956, Dr. Robert Adler of Zenith invented the first wireless TV remote control. Prior to the introduction of cordless remotes, TV remotes had wires connecting them to the television set. Remote controls typically utilize infrared signals for operation but may also employ radio frequency signals in certain cases.


Most remote controls use infrared diodes to emit an invisible beam of light at a wavelength of 940 nanometers for transmitting data. Advanced technology is employed in multichannel remote controls for modulating carrier signals and demodulating received signals. These remotes also incorporate various frequency filters that allow them to perform different functions by separating incoming signals accordingly. However, it’s important to note that infrared signals require a clear line of sight for effective operation.
Some remote controls don’t need to be pointed directly at the device they’re controlling because they use radio frequency signals. These types of remotes can either be focused in a specific direction or work from multiple directions.

Different types of remote 

There are typically three different types of remote controls;
  1. Infrared remote control; This type of remote control requires a direct line of sight and uses light to operate the device it’s connected to. For example, a television remote control often falls under this category. To use it, you need to point it towards the receiver. It’s also easy to program with additional functions and is relatively affordable.
  1. Voice control; Also known as an ultrasonic remote control, this type allows users to give commands through their voice. It can be as simple as activating street lights in a staircase corridor or any other application where sound input is sufficient. Sometimes, you don’t even need a specialized remote control; speaking loudly can do the trick.
  1. Radio remote control; This type is designed for controlling devices over longer distances. It operates by transmitting various radio signals from the remote control device to the target object or system being controlled. You’ll find radio remote controls used in applications such as garage door openers, car alarm fobs, automatic barrier systems, radio controlled toys and industrial automation systems. Moreover, this technology is becoming increasingly popular across various other domains.
These three types of remotes provide different ways for users to interact with and operate their devices or systems remotely.
These remote controls are known for their exceptional performance due to their intricate circuitry. However, they tend to be quite expensive and are designed to control devices that are located at a significant distance.

History of Remote Control

The history of remote control has greatly simplified our lives. It allows us to effortlessly change TV channels, adjust the volume and screen settings and even unlock car doors. All from the comfort of our seats.

The First Remote Control

The concept of remote control was first introduced in the 1800s. In 1898, an ingenious Serbian American inventor named Nikola Tesla created the world’s first wireless remote control. He named it “teleautomaton” and used it to operate a miniature boat using radio waves.

The Wireless Robot

In 1903, Leonardo Torres developed a remarkable robot called Telekino, which came with its own remote control. This invention marked a significant milestone in remote control technology as Torres utilized electromagnetic waves to command his robot. He later showcased this wireless technology by remotely controlling a boat and even had plans to use a similar device for controlling torpedoes.

The Military Use of Remote Controls

During World War II, remote control technology found extensive military applications. Remote controlled planes were flown for the first time around 1930 and they played a crucial role during wartime operations.
Radio companies were also incorporating remote controls into their devices and in 1939, the Philco Mystery Control became the pioneering consumer electronic device. The first television remote control was invented by Zenith Radio Corporation in 1950. To operate this remote control, users had to accurately aim it at the photoelectronic sensors on the TV, although occasionally it would experience difficulties functioning correctly.

Procedure of Remote Login :

Steps involved in the procedure of remote login;
  1. When a user inputs something on their local computer, the local operating system accepts the characters.
  2. The local computer doesn’t interpret these characters; instead, it sends them to a TELNET client.
  3. The TELNET client converts these characters into Network Virtual Terminal (NVT) characters, which is a universal character set.
  4. These NVT characters are then passed to the local TCP/IP protocol stack.
  5. In NVT form, commands or text travel through the internet and reach the TCP/IP stack of the remote computer.
  6. The characters are delivered to the operating system and then passed on to the TELNET server.
  7. The TELNET server converts these characters into a format that can be understood by the remote computer’s operating system.
  8. The remote operating system receives these characters from a pseudo terminal driver, which is software that mimics input from a terminal device.
  9. Finally, the operating system passes on these characters to the appropriate application program.

Characteristics of NVT Character Set;

The NVT character set allows TELNET clients to translate characters into NVT format and transmit them over networks.
Similarly, TELNET servers translate data and commands from NVT form into another format that can be understood by remote computers.
NVT employs two sets of characters; one for data and another for control purposes.
Both characters have a size of 8 bit bytes. When it comes to data, NVT is a character set consisting of 8 bit characters. In this character set, the 7 lowest bits are identical to ASCII, while the highest order bit is set to 0.


Remotes, whether in the form of remote controls for electronic devices or remote work arrangements, have become integral parts of modern life. Remote controls simplify our interaction with technology, offering convenience and ease of use. On the other hand, the concept of remote work has gained prominence, allowing individuals to work from locations other than a traditional office, often providing greater flexibility and work-life balance. The notion of “remote” underscores the importance of convenience, accessibility, and adaptability in our rapidly evolving world.
